Woolworth wins 'The User of the year 2005' award by 'Computerwoche'
Deutsche Woolworth GmbH wins in the mid category segment.
Deutsche Woolworth, a leading departmental retailer based in Germany was recently awarded 'The User of the year 2005' award, presented by the German magazine 'Computerwoche' (Computer Week) and Gartner Germany. In the competition this year, five companies from the original 77 had qualified themselves for the final round. In the large scale enterprise category, the SBB Cargo AG, the Berliner Stadtreinigungsbetriebe AöR and Heidelberger Druck competed for victory. In the mid segment range, Norisbank AG and Deutsche Woolworth fought for the title.

The jury consisted of Claudia Schnupfhagn, Vice President Gartner; Gerhard Adler, Advisor to the Management of Detecon International GmbH; Andreas Resch, Chairman of the Management of Bayer Business Services GmbH; Thomas Schildhauer, Director of Institute of Electronic Business at Institute of University of Künste, Berlin and Horst Wildemann, Technical University München, seat of Economic Management with emphasis on logistics. When Hartwig Hopfenzitz began his job as CIO with Woolworth, he knew only two things: He had the support of its managing directors and he had to be successful. Apart from this industry trend, Deutsche Woolworth had to fight with a home-made problem: In the course of management Buy Outs, it had tried in 1998, split off and a change of course. According to its own words "sympathetic small price department store" it also wanted to enter into the business with more expensive goods. This strategy failed and led to a change in the management.

The Beginning Power 2005 began with the modernization of the DW-BI system. In the first step, the makeup of the infrastructure was ensured, and in the next, stabilization of operational processes. The third followed in 2005 with the help of "ARC", the ready-to-go retail analytical systems. ARC is an out-of-box retail analytical solution with pre-built retail business KPIs, metrics and reports that integrated seamlessly with Woolworth's transactional systems. ARC provides a comprehensive set of performance metrics across Sales, Customers, Promotions, Operations, Merchandising, Purchasing, Inventory, Vendors, and Loss Prevention functions.

Metrics are delivered in the form of dashboards along with pre-defined reports, baseline analysis, key performance indicators and event alerts. Then came the implementation of Forecast-System "Superstore", by the means of which statistic procedure sales are forecast. In this way conversions can be predicted and the stocks in the branches be optimized. In the course of this work, the IT employees who had so far focused strongly on the proprietary development, learned to appreciate the value of standard software.

Through experiences with foreign co-operation partners, complex tasks are no more a problem in the international context today. If one asks Mr. Hopfenzitz today whether the giant project for Woolworth disbursed itself, the CIO, who is also a member of the management, gives a clear answer: "If we had not begun before three years with the project for the transformation of our IT and all our business processes, then Woolworth would no longer be competitive and could no longer act corresponding to real market conditions."
